From: Autoinsertion of soluble oligomers of Alzheimer's Aβ(1–42) peptide into cholesterol-containing membranes is accompanied by relocation of the sterol towards the bilayer surface

Figure 4

Intramembrane positioning of Aβ(1–42) oligomers, and the distribution of membrane water. The peptide was localised (dotted green line) by subtracting profiles obtained in 8.06 mol% D2O in the presence and absence of the peptide (dashed and solid black lines, respectively). The difference profile was fitted to 2 Gaussian distributions (solid green lines), as described for Fig. 3. The water difference profiles (dotted blue lines) were constructed by subtracting profiles obtained in 8.06 mol% D2O in the presence and absence of peptide, from profiles of the same samples in 20 mol% D2O (dashed and solid red lines, respectively). The water distributions are fitted to single Gaussians (dashed and solid blue lines, with maxima at the edges of the profiles). Note the substantial overlap in the presence and absence of peptide.
