Top and side view of the BPDO-O B1 hexamer. The structure of biphenyl 2,3-dioxygenase is a mushroom-shaped α3β3 hexamer. This quaternary structure is typical of αβ Rieske oxygenases. This structure allows a mononuclear iron from one α subunit to come within ~15 Å of a Rieske cluster from a neighboring subunit, allowing electron transfer to take place.
